Alex Romero

Originally from Valladolid in northern Spain and now based in Mallorca, Alex brings an engineering background and a growing passion for life at sea to TC Grace.

An Industrial Engineering graduate, he previously worked in Malta designing PLCs and control systems before deciding he wanted to take his engineering skills closer to the maritime world. That decision took him to Palma, where for the past ten months he has worked as an electrician in a shipyard, gaining hands-on experience aboard yachts ranging from around 30 to 80 metres.

It is a combination that makes him a particularly useful addition to Grace. Technical knowledge, practical electrical experience and an eagerness to understand how every system aboard a vessel works.

Alex already has around 600 to 700 nautical miles under sail, primarily aboard 13 to 14 metre sailing yachts.

His experience began with a passage from Ibiza to Valencia and back, followed by several deliveries between Mallorca and Barcelona. His longest passage so far took him from Menorca to Sardinia, followed by several days sailing around the north of the island.

Along the way he has gained experience in watchkeeping, sail trimming and the everyday realities of living and working aboard.

He also holds RYA Approved Engine Course AEC 1 and AEC 2, giving him a grounding in marine engines, onboard mechanical systems and troubleshooting.

Alex discovered TC Grace through Find a Crew and saw an opportunity to combine two things he wants more of. Time at sea and practical engineering experience.

Joining as Deckhand / Engineer, he will support the crew with deck work, watches and general duties while also getting involved with Grace's engineering and onboard systems.

For someone accustomed to modern yachts, TC Grace also offers something rather different. A 23-metre historic steel vessel with machinery and systems that reward curiosity, practical thinking and a willingness to get your hands dirty.

The voyage is another step towards a much bigger ambition.

Alex wants to develop his understanding of the complete technical environment aboard a vessel, from engines and mechanical systems to electrical and control systems, with the longer-term goal of progressing towards a career as an engineer/ETO or marine engineer officer.

For now, though, it is about miles, experience and learning.

More time at sea. More confidence aboard. More understanding of the machinery beneath the deck. And the chance to learn from the people around him while sharing one rather unusual voyage home aboard TC Grace.
