Floris Bochardt

From an early age, Floris has been fascinated by ships, sailing and life at sea. That passion led him to the Willem Barentsz Maritime Institute on the island of Terschelling, where he is studying to become a Maritime Officer.

For Floris, TC Grace offers something no classroom can fully replicate. The opportunity to experience long-distance passagemaking aboard a historic working vessel, learning directly from an experienced captain and crew.

As First Mate, Floris supports the day-to-day running of TC Grace throughout the expedition. His responsibilities include deck work, vessel maintenance, watchkeeping, navigation support and preparing the vessel for each stage of the journey.

Every mile sailed from Croatia to British waters contributes to the practical skills, judgement and confidence that will form the foundation of his future maritime career.

Alongside his studies at the Willem Barentsz Maritime Institute, Floris has completed recognised maritime safety, security, communications and survival craft training.

When Floris first heard about the TC Grace expedition, he didn't wait for the opportunity to come to him. He contacted Captain Luuk Spoelstra and asked to become part of the voyage.

That initiative reflects the curiosity and determination that have already shaped the beginning of his career at sea. Every sailor remembers their first major passage. For Floris, this is the voyage that begins that story.
